Hold The Moon

Hold The Moon

One day Thing 1 drew me a picture. I saw the shorter stick figure he’d made for himself and the stick figure he’d made for me, how our stick figure hands clasped each others but in the stick figure hand that his stick figure wasn’t clasping I had a large round ball drawn into my other hand. “What is that?” I asked him. Thing 1 looked up at me as if he could not believe I did not know. “It’s the moon!” He didn’t bat a lash for a second while saying it. “You always hold the moon,” he told me.To him…if he thought so…I could hold the moon. So this is a lullaby that I wrote for Thing 1 before Thing 2 was even constructing whole sentences. They are the only two lovely things that have ever caused me to actually “miss” something….and if you know me….I don’t ever miss anyone.

Smile my darling

Don’t give in to tears

In the nights I’ll whisper to you

Chase away your fears

Somewhere in the darkness a heart breaks in two

But here in my loving arms, for you I’ll hold the moon

Singing a Lullaby

Let the sea caress the rock

Taking your first humble steps

You’ll find your way to walk

Cuz somewhere on the bay a sinking ship is fooled

But here I’ll take you in my arms, for you I’ll hold the moon

Listen, sweetest darling

To the song I sing so low

Things aren’t always what they seem

Some things friend nor foe

And somewhere on god’s good earth the stars will shine for you

And here with you in my arms, for you I’ll hold the moon

For every time I kiss you

For you I wish the most

Wish for peace and happiness

Love and even loss

For somewhere a woman’s crying for a love gone too soon

But here with you in my arms for you I’ll hold the moon

You will love me best of all

Storms may come and rain might fall

And somewhere in the darkness a heart breaks in two

Tonight I take you in my arms, for you I’ll hold the moon
